How Often Should You Really Clean These 7 Overlooked Areas?

Everyone vacuums the floor and wipes the bench. It’s the spots you don’t see that quietly build up germs and grime. Here’s how often the forgotten areas actually need attention.

1. Light switches and door handles — weekly

The most-touched, least-cleaned surfaces in any home. A quick wipe with disinfectant takes two minutes.

2. Rangehood filters — monthly

Grease-clogged filters stop extracting and become a fire risk. Most metal filters can go through the dishwasher.

3. Washing machine seal and drawer — monthly

That black grime in the door seal is mould. Wipe the seal, empty the detergent drawer, and run an empty hot cycle with vinegar.

4. Mattresses — every 2–3 months

Vacuum the surface, sprinkle bicarb, leave an hour, vacuum again. Professional sanitisation yearly if you have allergies.

5. Ceiling fans and vents — every 2–3 months

They redistribute dust over everything below. An old pillowcase slipped over each blade catches the dust instead of raining it down.

6. Window tracks — quarterly

Dead insects, dust, and mould love them. Vacuum first, then scrub with an old toothbrush.

7. Behind and under appliances — twice a year

Pull out the fridge and washing machine: dust on coils makes fridges work harder, and lost socks aren’t improving with age.
