“Green” cleaning products used to mean paying more for something that barely worked. That’s changed — but the market is also full of greenwashing. Here’s what genuinely works, from a team that cleans for a living.
The pantry heroes
White vinegar cuts soap scum, descales kettles and shower heads, and shines glass (half vinegar, half water). Don’t use it on natural stone. Bicarbonate of soda deodorises carpets, mattresses, and fridges, and lifts grime from sinks with a light scrub. Lemon bleaches chopping-board stains and freshens drains. Together they’ll handle half your household cleaning for a few dollars.
What to look for in commercial products
Ignore words like “natural” and “eco” on the front — they’re unregulated. Check for: plant-based surfactants, biodegradable formulas, no chlorine bleach or ammonia, and recognised certifications (GECA or Environmental Choice in Australia). Concentrates and refill pouches beat single-use spray bottles on both price and packaging.
Where eco products struggle
Heavy oven grease, mould in grout, and end-of-lease-grade grime usually need stronger chemistry or professional equipment. The greenest option there is doing the job once, properly, rather than four attempts with a gentle spray.
